Coming Soon: Google Apps for Education Edition at MSU
On Thursday, November 19, 2009, Michigan State University will be rolling out Google Apps for Education Edition at MSU. Libraries, Computing and Technology with Academic Technology Services began working with Google this past summer to secure a contract enabling students, faculty, and staff to take advantage of various Education Edition Apps available through googleapps.msu.edu.
MSU Google Apps will work using current authentication methods – MSU NetIDs and passwords. The Google Apps Education Edition provides improved contractual terms of service over standard terms of service provided to individual public users. Read the LCT appropriate use document for information on cloud computing terms of services at lct.msu.edu.
MSU Google Apps will include:
Google Docs: Create and share documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Collaborate in real-time with your team or whole school. Documents are automatically saved and stored online so they are accessible anywhere from any computer. Sharing a document within MSU, as well as with anyone outside the institution, involves sharing a link.
Google Calendar: Organize your schedule in context with other shared calendars. Calendars and events can easily be shared and connected with friends, classmates, and anyone else inside or outside your school community.
Google Sites: Gather a variety of information in one place – including videos, calendars, presentations, attachments, and text – and share it for viewing or editing with a small group, an entire organization, or the world.
* Gmail will not be supported through the Google Apps for Education Edition at MSU agreement.
Current Google App Users Please Note:
Upon the launch of MSU Google Apps, current Goggle Apps users will need to export their data from existing services if they want that information to appear in their MSU Google Apps accounts. Additionally, documents, spreadsheets, and presentations explicitly published outside MSU and linked to from a public Web site will be crawled and indexed, which means they can appear in search results on Google.com and other search engines.
More Information:
Details regarding Google Apps for Education Edition at MSU will be available in a full service announcement in mid-November, at which point the terms of service and recommended usage will also be further defined.
Additional MSU Google Apps details are also available in knowledge base articles 13256 and 13177 at help.msu.edu.
